When is the best time to Kiteboard or Wingfoil in La Ventana, Mexico?

If you are making your way down the coast of Baja California Sur, you won't want to miss a windy day in La Ventana.

Once a sleepy fishing village, La Ventana, Mexico, has evolved into a kitesurfing hub. This spot offers consistent and reliable wind during the peak months. Knowing when to plan a trip to La Ventana can help you maximize the number of windy days on your vacation.

Why the Wind Blows Here

La Ventana is windy due to a combination of factors, including the Venturi Effect. Due to its position, between Cerralvo Island and mainland Baja, the bay in La Ventana acts as a funnel, increasing the pressure of the northern winds. Also, the warm afternoons quickly heat the desert air, drawing the cooler air from the Sea of Cortez. The shape of the bay makes these thermal winds more consistent and less gusty.

Winds in La Ventana can also be influenced by the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle. During La Niña years, the wind in La Ventana tends to be stronger and more consistent on the Baja Peninsula. By contrast, El Niño years have lighter and less reliable winds.

These elements cause LV to typically outperform the forecast, leading to more frequent and windier days.

Wind Starts to Pick Up in Late Fall

October is the start of the windy season in La Ventana. Early in the season, there are fewer wind days and lower wind speeds, but fewer crowds. In recent years, kiters have been able to enjoy a windy October; however, this is not typically the case.

Windy Season Peaks in the Winter

January, March, and April have the most wind days, with a typical lull in February. While the different launch points may be crowded, once you are out on the water, there is plenty of space to learn new maneuvers or simply cruise around.

Because there is a considerable variation in wind speeds during the peak season, access to different-sized kites is super important. During heavy El Norte (high-speed northern wind) days, you will want to have a smaller kite. We have kites and wings of all sizes available for rent

Winds Fade in Spring

April is most likely your last chance to catch the wind in LV. While there are fewer wind days, there is lots to do in La Ventana on no-wind days

Slow Summer

Most wind hubs in North America peak in the summertime, but La Ventana is the exception. This makes LV a great place to hone your skills when your local spot is windless and cold in winter. If you visit La Ventana in the summer, you might be disappointed by the limited wind, so plan your trip accordingly or consider an eFoil lesson
