What to Do in (and around) La Ventana, B.C.S., Mexico

If you have a free day or an afternoon without a kitesurfing lesson, La Ventana is a spectacular place to adventure, relax, drink, or dine.

Whether you choose to relax in the sun on the beach or opt for a big adventure, you are sure to have a very memorable experience.

There is plenty to do for the whole family and children of all ages.

Stand Up Paddleboarding

On a no-wind day, stand-up paddleboarding offers a great way to see the water and wildlife. We have SUPs available to rent.

Surfing Day Trip to Todos Santos

Cerritos Beach, just south of Todos Santos, is a great place to get your surfing fix while in Mexico. Check the conditions before making the drive, but winter is typically the best time to surf in Baja.

The drive from La Ventana to Cerritos Beach is between 1 ½ and 2 hours, so plan accordingly. We recommend driving during daylight hours due to poor visibility, road conditions, and free-range cattle.

Mountain Biking and Hiking

We recommend Rancho Cacachilas to rent MTB equipment.

Check out the La Ventana (South) trail system for flatter, less demanding rides with beautiful scenery through our giant cactus forest overlooking the Sea of Cortez.

The El Sargento (North) trail system is more challenging and includes some black diamonds and a double black diamond.

Hiking is another great way to see nature in the local area. There are nearly 100 local hiking trails to explore.

Both mountain biking and hiking trail systems can be easily obtained via Trailforks.

Fishing

Sport fishing is very popular in La Ventana. If you plan to go fishing on a boat, we recommend

Palapas Ventana. They will provide a fishing license, which is a requirement for anyone fishing from a boat or spearfishing. Even if you are on a boat with fishing equipment and not actively fishing, you are still required to carry a license.

Sierra Mackeral, Yellowfin Tuna, and various snapper fish are all common fish to catch in the winter in the Sea of Cortez.

Some people fish from the shore, but it is much less common. Shore fishing does not require a license.

Yoga

For a soothing stretch overlooking the Sea of Cortez, we recommend Casa Verde. Classes are 200 pesos, with mats available to rent for 50 pesos. Classes are suitable for all skill levels and are held Monday-Saturday at 8:30 am.

Massage

Our favorite massage therapist is Illiana Solis from Theraputic Massages. She is very popular, so book in advance!

Experience the Local Cuisine

The Cacachilas Ranch is excellent for tasting local cuisine and experiencing local ranch culture. They have an amazing culinary experience that is a must if you are lucky enough to be here during one of their farm-to-table nights.

Casa Xolo is another great spot with a rotating menu. It may require a reservation during the busy season.

Explore the Farmers Market

You'll find fresh produce, delicious food, local jewelry and clothing vendors at the Farmers Market from 8 am to noon on Thursdays.

Relax

There are lots of spots to relax on and near the beach. We enjoy Cantaritos La Ventana for margaritas and La Tuna for excellent appetizers.

Ocean Wildlife Watch

Snorkelling and Scuba Diving

We have some smaller reefs in La Ventana where it's fun to see all the local fish and corals. Dolphins, whales, and mobula rays can sometimes be seen from shore. Sharks and Mantas are around, but not for snorkeling; you would need to go further away from shore to see them.

Not SCUBA certified? No worries! Most of the local dive shops offer classes to obtain SCUBA certifications. You can also rent SCUBA and snorkeling equipment from them!

For an excellent SCUBA trip, go to Cabo Pulmo!

Visit the Jacques Cousteau Island

You can book a boat trip to the island for snorkeling (which helps to create part of our wind through the Venturi effect). The island has a beach on the southwest side where snorkeling is excellent; you might see some adolescent seals there, too.

Want to go whale watching?

Whale tours typically start in January. The best place to go is Magdalena Bay, which is about 3.5-4 hours from La Ventana.

The Blue Whale, the world's largest species of animal, peaks in season in February. Look for grey whales throughout the winter.

Whale sharks can be viewed in La Paz. We recommend lapazviptours.com for legitimate, registered tour guides.

Free wifi and good vibes at the Kite and Wing Academy Clubhouse.

Whether you are looking for a big adventure or a calm relaxing day on the beach, Baja has much to offer. We hope you enjoy your stay and see why LV is the place to be!
