When is the best time to Kitesurf in Corpus Christi?
Corpus Christi has been attracting windsurfers since the 80s, and the windsport scene here has been steadily growing ever since. With the introduction of kiteboarding and wingfoiling in recent years, Corpus has become a hub for windsports.
The shallow waters make it an ideal place to learn, and the consistent winds keep kiters and wingers coming back. With so many different launch points, it can feel like you're all alone on the water, which gives beginners peace of mind and gives experts more space to try new maneuvers.
Like most coastal areas, Corpus Christi experiences a windy season and a calm period. Knowing what time of year and what time of day to get out on the water will help you progress in the sport quickly and enjoy more sessions.
What time of year should I Kiteboard or Wingfoil in Corpus Christi?
Most people assume that summer is the best time to pick up a new watersport. While they aren’t necessarily wrong, summer is an excellent time to catch the wind; Kitesurfing and Wingfoiling are year-round sports, depending on the wind, of course. The windy season tends to vary depending on the location, which is why so many kiteboarders travel throughout the year.
Start in the Spring
The Corpus wind season typically begins in mid-March with some north frontal winds, and by April, our consistent south wind starts to take hold. The wind only gets better throughout May and into the start of summer.
Do I need a wetsuit?
In the early spring months, you will likely want a wetsuit. Full wetsuits and 3/2 shorty suits are popular in the early spring. Don’t worry, we’ll set you up with one of our wetsuits for the colder lessons. The water temperature ranges from 61°F (16°C) in March to 80°F (27 °C) in May.
The earlier you start taking lessons in the Spring, the more fun you’ll have riding solo throughout the summer.
Enjoy the Warm Summer
Take advantage of the winds while Corpus Christi starts to warm up in May and June, until the wind starts to fade in late July. However, we can expect to have a longer wind season during a La Niña year.
Water temperatures in the late summer can reach 86°F (30°C).
To a beginner, it may sound crazy that our instructors leave Corpus in mid-July, because that’s when the weather starts to really heat up. July is our 10th consecutive month of teaching Kitesurfing and Wingfoiling between our locations, so we like to take a break before the longer La Ventana season begins in October. We use these months off to explore more kite spots we've never ventured to.
Winds are Typically Weak in the Fall
August and September are typically the months with the least consistent wind in Corpus Christi.
If you are traveling to kitesurf, we don’t recommend traveling to Corpus Christi from August to February due to the considerably less consistent wind. This is why we head south to La Ventana, Mexico, in October to catch their warm, windy winters.
Winter Wind is for the Locals
The wind perks up a little bit for the locals during the winter, but you have to be here and ready at a moment's notice for when it comes in.
What time of day should I get out on the water in Corpus?
This may seem obvious, but the best time to enjoy any windsport is when it's WINDY. During April, May, June, and July, you can expect to have solid wind from sunrise to sunset.
The windiest time of day during the peak season is around 3 pm, at the hottest time of the day. The hot air over the land and the cool air over the Gulf create a pressure difference, which generates the wind.
Whether you're traveling to Corpus Christi or live nearby, we hope to see you for lessons in the spring.
