Why an eFoil lesson is the best way to spend your day off in La Ventana
Fly above the water and have a blast on one of our four eFoils as we cruise through the Sea of Cortez. Bring your friends, or get one-on-one instruction from our awesome staff.
What is an eFoil?
An eFoil is an electric, remote-controlled board. When you get going, the speed lifts you and the board about 6-18 inches above the water, while the foil carries you through it.
How Fast can an eFoil go?
Our Waydoo Flyer EVO Max Plus eFoils reach a top speed of 28 mph, but you most likely will not go that fast. We typically measure the eFoil's speed by gear number (1-24). Most of the lesson will be spent at around 15mph.
You can slow down if you see something cool or need a break. Depending on the rider’s weight, lift is achieved between 11 and 16 mph.
What happens during an eFoil lesson?
First, we’ll give you the rundown and walk you through the controls, crashing techniques, and safety precautions on land. The land portion of your first lesson is between 10 and 20 minutes. We'll also discuss obstacles, such as swimmers, other eFoil riders, vessels on the water, and reefs.
We have found that the best way to learn is to start on your belly, then move to your hands and knees, and finally stand on your feet.
An instructor will coach you from the beach via two-way radio communication helmets, so you can chat with an instructor the whole time.
Once you get the hang of it, you’ll cruise around the Sea of Cortez. Choose your own adventure. You can explore the coast or go searching for wildlife.
We’ve also teamed up with a marine biologist from Baja Bound Eco Sprouts to offer snorkeling tours in the middle of an eFoil lesson. Here, you will anchor the eFoils and get snorkels to tour the underwater world with a seasoned tour guide and marine biologist.
How to fall off an eFoil
Like most board sports, falling is inevitable. When you fall you should release the trigger of the remote and try to fall away from the board to avoid injury. Don’t try to rebalance when you start to feel the board tip. After you fall, you will have to swim back to your board.
Does learning to eFoil improve my ability to Kitefoil or Wingfoil?
Absolutely! eFoiling gives you the opportunity to feel what it’s like to soar above the water when the foil lifts the board. It also gives you an idea of how much speed you’ll need for the board to lift. Spending more time on the foil can help you find the right balance and foot position needed to achieve consistent, controlled lift.
eFoiling also gives you the chance to focus on your balance without managing a kite or wing.
eFoiling is the most fun you will have on a no-wind day
Nothing beats a windy day in La Ventana, with a beach full of kites. But, if you want a day off or the wind just isn’t blowing, consider trying out eFoiling. You will have a blast making the wide-open Sea of Cortez a playground for eFoil exploration.
